SPRING ROUND-UP: Panthers open soccer season with wins; Brown, Hooten win state titles

HEBER SPRINGS – The spring sports season opened up on Monday for four Heber Springs Panther teams with mixed results.
The boys and girls soccer teams won home matches over Riverview at Panther Stadium, while the baseball and softball teams opened with losses.
For the track teams, the senior boys and girls competed at the Class 4A state indoor track meet on Saturday in Fayetteville.
GIRLS SOCCER
Cristina Garcia scored three times and Sam Gilley twice as Heber Springs (1-0) led 5-0 until late in the contest before the Riverview (0-1) added late goal on the Lady Panther reserves.
Heber Springs returns to action on Thursday at Panther Stadium against Conway St. Joseph (0-0).
BOYS SOCCER
Senior Gus Hannah and freshman Braden Biggs each scored as Heber Springs (1-0) opened with a 2-1 win over Riverview (0-1).
Chandler Webber picked up the assist on each of the goals, while senior goalkeeper Jackson West had 10 saves in the night.
Heber Springs will return to action on Thursday at home against Conway St. Joseph (0-0).
BASEBALL
Heber Springs opened the coach Ryan Bridges era with a trip to Bridges’ alma mater, Sheridan, for a nonconference tournament.
The 4A Panthers led until the late innings but were not able to pull out the win against the 5A Yellowjackets falling 13-4.
Heber Springs (0-1) will tangle with another 5A school today in the same tournament when they face Searcy at Benton with first pitch set for 5:45 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Due to wet field conditions, Heber Springs’ season-opener was moved from Maumelle. Despite the home field advantage, the Lady Panthers dropped a 7-2 decision.
Heber Springs will look to bounce back today as they host Nemo Vista at 4:30 p.m.
TRACK
At the Class 4A state indoor meet on Saturday on the campus of the University of Arkansas, sophomore Parker Brown and junior Jaylea Hooten each won individual state titles by winning the high jump.
The boys mile relay team also claim a first-place finish.

Panthers, Lady Panthers take second at district track meet

The Heber Springs Lady Panthers and Panthers fell short of their goals at the 4-4A Conference track and field meet, but came away with success.
The Panthers and Lady Panthers were runner-up in their respective divisions with 13 athletes qualifying for the Class 4A state meet in 16 events at Panther Stadium on Wednesday.
Freshman Parker Brown, who received the high-point award at last week’s junior high meet, scored 46 points and won the high-point award at Wednesday’s competition. Brown was the winner of the 100-meter dash, high jump and long jump and finished second in the 200-meter dash and triple jump.
“It was a good day,” Brown said. “I got a personal best in the long jump. Winning the high point again was a surprise.”
Heber Springs head boys’ coach Dale Cresswell said Brown’s performance was not a surprise to him.
“Parker is one of those athletes born with a lot of athletic abilty,” Cresswell said. “I knew he would score points.”
Kevin King was the other Panther who qualified in multi-events. King won the 200-meter dash and finished third in the 100-meter dash and the triple jump.
Nathan Poff claimed third place in the 1600-meter run and qualified for the state meet.
The Panthers scored 154.50 points, 18.50 points behind conference champion Ozark.
“It is always good to have a lot of personal bests and good performances,” Cresswell said. “We did well. The distance races were the main difference. Poff had a personal best in the 1600. We are working to become better in those events.”
Maygan Jarvis and Rylee Birmingham won multi-events for the Lady Panthers. Jarvis topped the field in the pole vault and discus. Birmingham won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
Jaylea Hooten, runner-up for the girls’ high-point award, won the high jump and finished third in the long jump, and the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
The Lady Panthers qualified in three relays for the state meet.
Jarvis, Addison Hudspeth, Natalie Buffalo and Cristina Garcia were third in the 800-meter relay. Natalie Buffalo, Jarvis, Garcia and Birmingham finished second in the 1600-meter relay. Riley Bailey, Allison Wildman, Sydney Buffalo and Vallie Cantrell were runner-up in the 3200-meter relay.
The Lady Panthers scored 119 points, 30 points behind conference winner Clarksville.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Heber Springs girls’ coach Hunter Davis said. “All you can from them is to give their best. I was pleased with the second-place finish. We had a lot of personal bests. We had good effort and left all out on the track.”
The state meet will be held at Nashville High School on Tuesday.

Heber Springs cross country team heads to state meet

Heber Springs High School runners hope for better performances and compete for medals at the Class 4A state cross country championship at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs Friday.
The Lady Panthers, who were the 4-4A Conference runner-up, will start at 9 a.m. The Panthers, who were fourth at the conference meet, will go to the starting line at 9:45 a.m.
Three Lady Panthers, ranked sixth by Arkansas mile split, finished among the top 10 last week’s conference meet in Clarksville. Sydney Buffalo claimed fifth place with a time of 22:53.0. Maygan Jarvis (23:27.90) captured sixth place and Vallie Cantrell (23:30.20) was seventh. Riley Bailey (24:03.50) finished 11th, followed by Samantha Gilley (24:33.10) in 12th place and Allison Wildman (25:05.10) in 13th place.
“Sixth of the 10 girls had personal best performances,” Heber Springs head coach Dale Cresswell said. “Clarksville had a very good team. Times don’t really matter at the state meet, it’s runners’ places on that day.”
Sophomore Nathan Poff finished ninth for the Panthers with a time of 19:11.0. Mason Harris (13th place, 20:12.50), Gabe Tate (15th place, 20:22.60) and Landon Leisenring (19th place, 20:43) were among the top 20.
“Six runners had personal bests at the conference meet,” Cresswell said. “Nathan broke his toe early in the season and recently returned. His times now are faster than last year when he competed as a freshman.”
Cresswell said he was impressed with his younger runners. Seventh grader Sarina Mays (14:45.60) finished fourth for the junior high girls. Eighth-grader Jocelyn Baureis (15:07.40) claimed eighth place and eighth-grader Marisa Kelley (15:08.30) was ninth.
Eighth-grader Wade Harris (12:32.90) led the junior high school boys by finishing third, followed by freshman Noah Cordes (13:04.60), who was seventh. Freshman Logan Cox (13:14.90) finished ninth.
Both teams were runner-up in their respective divisions.
“The junior girls ran well all year,” Cresswell said. “Our No. 1 runner was a seventh-grader and our No. 2 runner was an eighth-grader. The junior high boys also ran well and unfortunately got caught by Pottsville at the end of the race.”

Heber Springs junior girls get host Ozark at district tourney

Heber Springs heads into tonight’s 4A-4 junior girls district tournament having lost its regular season finale to Dardanelle on February 4th, but coach Jamey Riddle likes his team’s chances.
The Panthers will open with the host Ozark at 6:15 p.m. as the No. 4 seed. Ozark defeated Heber Springs in the district title game last season.
“We’ve beat Ozark both times this year,” Riddle said. “We just need to show up and play.”
He added that is something that Heber Springs has done on two out of it’s last three conference road trips, a 52-24 setback to Pottsville on January 28th and a 36-20 loss at Dardanelle on February 4th.
“We went over to Pottsville and laid an egg,” Riddle said. “We just didn’t play very well.”
Against the Sand Lizards, the Panthers trailed 10-2 at the end of the first quarter and 19-7 at the half, and couldn’t overcome the deficit.
“We only lost to by three here (to Dardanelle) in a game that we felt like we should have won,” Riddle said. “We just didn’t get it done.”
The Panthers entered what Riddle called a “little slump” after a big 55-52 win over Dover on January 24th. Heber Springs played a good Mayflower team, one that handed Dover it’s first loss of the season before the Panthers beat them for it’s second, on the road on a Monday before traveling to Pottsville the following day.
“They beat us pretty good, but they only beat us by five here,” Riddle said. “We just didn’t play very well, and we had a few that weren’t feeling very with all of the sickness that was going around.”
A win by Heber Springs and the Panthers would get Pottsville in a semifinal contest at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
“I like our chances and where we are at (in the bracket),” Riddle said. “You never know. Practice has been good in the mornings and this is going to be a new week. You just have to show up and play.”

Heber Springs drops two in junior girls play

The Heber Springs junior girls went on the road and dropped a pair of contests.
On Monday, Heber Springs fell to Mayflower, 47-42, in nonconference play and followed that by dropping a 52-24 decision in 4A-4 play at Pottsville.
Heber Springs travels to Ozark on Friday before closing out the regular season next week at home against Quitman on Monday before travelling to Dardanelle on Tuesday to close out 4A-4 play.
On Monday against Mayflower, Heber Springs led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at the half before falling to Mayflower. The Panthers held an eight-point advantage heading into the final stanza but could only manage a pair of Jaylea Hooten field goals an were outscored in the final quarter.
Hooten finished with 12 points as Sophia Stone paced Heber Springs with 15 points.
The two teams combined to shot 52 free throws as Mayflower was 19 of 31 from the line while Heber Springs was 11 of 21.
On Tuesday, Heber Springs trailed 30-15 at the break and fell, 52-24, to Pottsville.
Stone finished with 15 to pace the Panthers while Hooten added 12.

Stone scores 31 as Heber Springs downs Dover

Sophia Stone scored a career-high 31 points as Heber Springs downed Dover, 55-52, in junior girls action Friday night at the Panther Den.
The win by Heber Springs was the first in three tries against Dover this season. Dover handed the Panthers their first setback of the season, 60-49, on Nov. 14 at the Marshall tournament and then downed Heber Springs, 43-33, in the conference opener for the Panthers on Dec. 10 at Dover.
But on Friday it was Heber Springs that would come out on top.
Dover jumped out to a 14-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter and also led 24-21 at the break, but the Panthers would come out of the half and take an eight-point advantage into the final stanza as Stone scored 11 points of the 15 Heber Springs points in the quarter.
In the fourth, the game got bogged down at the free-throw line as Dover hit 14 out of 18 from the charity stripe while Heber Springs was 5-of-9, but the Panthers were able to hold on as Stone was a perfect 4-of-4 in the quarter from the line. She finished the night by going 9-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Dover’s Abree McCrotty, who had a combined 49 points in the previous two meetings with Heber Springs, finished the night with 29 points, going a perfect 9-of-9 from the line in the fourth quarter. She finished the night by going 13-of-19 from the stripe.
The two teams combined to shot 57 free throws on the night as Dover went 20-34 from the line while Heber Springs was 13-of-23.
Jaylea Hooten finished the night with 19 points, including eight in the final quarter.
The loss was only Dover’s second of the season and their first in 4A-4 conference play as Heber Springs improved to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Heber Springs will travel to Mayflower on Monday for a nonconference contest. The Eagles handed Dover its first loss of the season. On Tuesday, the Panthers will travel to Pottsville for a 4A-4 contest. The Apaches downed Heber Springs earlier this year at the Panther Den, 34-31.

Heber Springs junior girls fall to Mount Vernon-Enola

Sophia Stone finished with 15 points while Jaylea Hooten added 10 in a losing effort as Heber Springs fell to Mount Vernon-Enola, 38-33, in junior girls action at the Panther Den.
The two teams were tied at the half, 20-20, while the War Hawks led 29-26 at the end of the three quarters in the nonconference contest.
Heber Springs pulled to within one at 34-33 with 3:18 left after at Hooten basket but the Warhawks went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
The junior girls return to action on Thursday when they host Marshall.
The Panthers have dropped three out of four contests to start the new year.
On Jan. 14, Stone finished with 16 points as Heber Springs fell to Dardanelle, 32-29, in a 4A-4 contest at the Panther Den.
On Jan. 9 at Newport in nonconference play, it was Hooten who finished with 16 as the Panthers downed the Greyhounds, 40-21.
Stone (15) and Hooten (10) both finished in double figures in a 34-31 setback to Pottsville in the Panther Den on Jan. 7.

Heber Springs junior girls even conference mark

The Heber Springs junior girls improved to 8-4 overall, but more importantly 1-1 in 4A-4 play, with a 21-7 victory over Ozark Friday night at the Panther Den.
Heber Springs led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Hillbillies, 9-0, in the second quarter to take a 13-3 lead in the half.
The Panthers led by eight after the third quarter before shutting out Ozark in the final quarter to claim the win.
Heber Springs was playing without one of its top scorers, Sophia Stone, but Jaylea Hooten picked up in her place scoring 12 points while Addison Hudspeth added four.
The Panthers are off until January when they will host Pottsville on Jan. 7 in a 4A-4 contest at the Panther Den.

Heber Springs junior girls host Ozark on Friday

The Heber Springs junior girls basketball team will look to even its 4A-4 conference record on Friday when they host Ozark at the Panther Den beginning at 4 p.m.
It will be the Panthers final game of the year before returning to action on Jan. 7 at home against Pottsville.
Heber Springs (7-4) dropped its conference opener on Dec. 10 at Dover, 43-33, as Sophia Stone finished with 15 points. The Panthers led 21-18 at the half, but were outscored 25-12 in the second half, including 12-3 in the final quarter.
Heber Springs started the season 2-0 before dropping a 60-49 decision to Dover on Nov. 14 at the semifinals of the Marshall junior high tournament. The Panthers also led at the half during that contest, 29-24. Stone had 20 points in a losing effort while Jaylea Hooten finished with 13.
The Panthers bounced back defeating the host, Marshall, in a consolation contest at the tournament, 40-25, on Nov. 16 as Hooten had 13 points in the win.
Heber Springs would down South Side Bee Branch, 44-22, on Nov. 19 and Riverview, 46-13, on Nov. 21 as Stone had 19 points in the win over South Side Bee Branch.
On Nov. 23, the Panthers hosted a one-day junior high tournament at the Panther Den. Heber Springs won its opener, 62-10, over the Cabot South 8th-Grade team as Addison Hudspeth finished with 17 points.
In the championship game, Heber Springs used a 6-0 run to close out the first half to take a 16-15 advantage into the half against Conway Blue, even pushing its lead to 22-16 after a Sophia Stone lay-up with 2:27 left in the third quarter. But Hooten picked up her fourth foul and had to set the remainder of the quarter as the Wampus Cats used their size to re-take the lead and win the title.
Heber Springs dropped a 48-40 contest to Clinton on Nov. 26 as Hooten had 15 points in the loss.
The Panthers won their last game on Dec. 12 with a 52-31 victory at South Side Bee Branch. Hooten had 24 points in the win, including 12 points in the third quarter, while Stone and Rylee Harrod each finished with 10.
