Little Rock falls to Missouri State

LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock soccer team (1-3-1) fought hard at home against a quick Missouri State team, falling 2-1 after a strong attempt at equalizing the match. Doro Greulich scored her first goal of the season in the first appearance of her senior campaign, soaring a well-placed shot into the net after being awarded a free kick right outside the box.

Missouri State started off the game with the control, earning a goal in the 11th minute. However, the Trojans were right in the midst of the action, creating several opportunities of their own, ultimately being stopped by an agile Bear goalie. MSU struck again at the 83rd minute following a well-executed cross, but Little Rock refused give up and earned a goal of their own soon after.

“I think we’re actually playing some really good soccer,” said head coach Mark Foster. “I know we’re not getting the results that reflect that, but that’s the reality of college sports. We’re just a little short, even though some of our girls played their best game of the season. If we stay positive, I think we’re going to learn the lessons and figure it out soon.”

Little Rock looked lively, despite competing in the third game within the past five days. The Trojans registered 9 shots to the Bears’ 8, with five on goal by five different players. Along with Greulich’s, Bergros Asgeirsdottir, Fanney Einarsdottir, Mari Young, and Ziva Payer each notched on-target shots. Little Rock also managed to earn 11 free kicks compared to Missouri State’s three, helping the offensive action.

The Trojans will take the next couple of days to regroup before the team travels to Texas on Thursday, Sept. 5, to take on TCU at 7 p.m.

Bears fall to in-state foe

CONWAY –  It was a rough afternoon in Jonesboro for the Central Arkansas women’s soccer team as a rocky start to the match left themselves with a small chance of recovery. The Bears traveled to Jonesboro to take on Arkansas State, a team that came into the match coming off a huge victory against Big 12 Conference affiliate Kansas State. 

Central Arkansas (0-3), found themselves down two goals less than five minutes into the match, conceding a goal in the second minute and another in the third. However, the Bears responded to adversity and got a goal back in the 23rd minute before ultimately conceding a third goal late as more numbers were thrown forward in an attempt to equalize.

First Half

  • Arkansas State’s Abigail Glockzin gave the Red Wolves an early 1-0 advantage inside of two minutes into the match.
  • Arkansas State doubled their lead in the third minute on a goal from Sarah Sodoma.
  • The Red Wolves nearly grabbed a third in the 20th minute, however UCA keeper Reagan McCombs was up to the task and recorded her first save of the afternoon.
  • Central Arkansas cut the deficit in half in the 23rd minute courtesy of a Gracie Hair goal, her first of the season.
  • The Bears would nearly equalize five minutes later on a Emma Hawkins strike that flew just wide right of the net. 

Second Half

  • The Bears continued to threaten in the second half in search for the equalizing goal and nearly grabbed it in the 53rd minute on a Jordan Slim strike that forced a corner kick. 
  • Hawkins again nearly tied it up for Central Arkansas in the 67th minute as she saw her strike fly just high of the net. 
  • A corner kick opportunity in the 80th minute nearly saw the Red Wolves grab their two goal advantage again as ASU’s Haley Husted was denied by goalkeeper Elizabeth Lewis just in front of goal. 
  • ASU would score the final goal of the match in the 84th minute as the Bears many numbers forward in a final attempt to grab an equalizer.

Central Arkansas finished the match with eight total shots, and only one on frame. Goalkeepers McCombs and Lewis each saw a half of action recording two saves apiece.

“Today was similar to Friday in that we gave away a couple of scoring chances early in the match and our opponent took full advantage, but we settled in after that and controlled most of the play. Today, we didn’t create enough scoring chances to get ourselves fully back into the game. We have to be sharper in the final third so we can get more looks at goal. It’s a process. We have to keep working and I know this group will.”

UCA, Campbell draw Even after 110 minutes

CONWAY – Few chances created saw Central Arkansas hang on for a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of play tonight in an ultimate dogfight from the Bill Stephens Complex in Conway. 

Central Arkansas took an early 1-0 advantage in the first ten minutes of the match, but were unable to create many more chances following the goal. Campbell found an equalizer in the second half and would create a few more quality scoring chances, but neither team was unable to find a late winner. 

First Half

  • Central Arkansas took an early 1-0 lead in the tenth minute after capitalizing on a set piece. Soren Jensen converted a header flicked on by Mathias Bendiksen and just got it over the goal line in what was a goal by a matter of inches. 
  • UCA’s Katsuyoshi Kimishima had a chance to double the Bears’ lead in the 30th minute, but saw his shot fly wide right. 
  • Marc Olsen came up big for the Bears in the final moments of the first half, denying the Camels an equalizer in the 44th minute, recording his first of four saves on the evening. 

Second Half

  • The second half saw little action until the 64th minute, where Campbell finally found an equalizing goal on a Thibaut Jacquel free kick strike from 25 yards out. 
  • The Camels would continue to apply pressure and nearly grabbed the lead in the 74th minute, but again Olsen was up to the task denying Aigbekan Nosegbe the go-ahead on a near post strike.  
  • Olsen denied the Ramblers a late winner in the 87th minute, diving down to his left side and pushing the ball out for a corner on a hard hit strike by Humberto Chavez. Chavez’s attempt would be the final opportunity created in regulation. 

Extra Time

  • UCA’s Nate Lancaster came to the rescue for the Bears in the 95th minute on a fantastic goal line clearance, denying the Camels a golden goal winner. 
  • The Camel’s were again denied a winner by Olsen in the 97th minute, recording his third save of the night. 
  • Campbell created the final opportunity of the match in the 107th minute as Alex Egeonu’s strike down the middle forced yet another save from Olsen. 

Central Arkansas finished the match with just six total shots and only one on frame compared to Campbell’s 18 total shots and five on target

ASU defeats UCA, 3-1

JONESBORO – Three Red Wolves scored for the first time this season, as the Arkansas State soccer team defeated in-state foe Central Arkansas 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the A-State Soccer Park.

Following the win, the Red Wolves improved to 2-1 while Central Arkansas fell to 0-3 on the year. 

Carrollton, Texas, native, Abby Glockzin found the back of the net in the 2ndminute, her first of the season, giving the Red Wolves a 1-0 lead over the Sugar Bears. The goal was setup by Junior Haley Furio, who sent a near perfect corner kick into the box, which found Glockzin just inches away from the net.

The Red Wolves struck again about 2 minutes later, in the 3rd minute, off the foot of Haley Husted which marked her first goal of the season. Sarah Sodoma was credited with assist, allowing the home team to build a 2-0 advantage over Central Arkansas. However, UCA pulled within 2-1 in the 23rdminute off of a Gracie Hair goal, which marked its only goal of the match.

Riley Minard added insurance to the Red Wolves lead in the 84th minute 3-1, after a free kick. The goal marked the first of the 2019 campaign for the Overland Park, Kansas, native. Husted led the Red Wolves offensively with four shots while Sodoma followed with three. 

Megan McClure only allowed on goal as Arkansas State out shot UCA 14-8 on the day. The Scarlet and Black took four shots on goal compared to the Sugar Bear’s 1 while only committed nine fouls compared to the UCA 16.

Arkansas State will return to action Thursday, Sept. 5, when it hosts Jackson State at the A-State Soccer Park. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

Razorbacks blast SEMO, 5-0

OXFORD, Miss. – Razorback soccer (2-1-1) concluded their week at the Rebel Classic with a 5-0 win against the SE Missouri State Redhawks (1-2-0) on Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Four different Hogs scored in the match with Arkansas outshooting SEMO by a 29-5 margin.

How It Happened

>> Stefani Doyle got the Razorbacks started early after she went one-on-one with the SEMO ‘keeper, side-stepping her before putting it away on the open goal in the 8th-minute.

>> After knocking on the door with a few opportunities, senior Tori Cannata beat her defender to the left side in the 17th-minute and slotted it to the back post for the 2-0 Razorback lead.

>> In the 37th-minute Kaelee Van Gundy drew a foul for the Razorbacks on the right-hand side setting up a Cannata free kick. Brooke Pirkle would redirect the cross with her head for the third Razorback goal of the half.

>> In the opening minutes of the second half, junior Taylor Malham made a run down the left side, sending in a cross that eventually found Anna Podojil for the goal. It was the freshman’s second-straight match with a goal.

>> Cannata picked up her second goal of the afternoon after going lower right corner on a free kick from a couple yards outside the box in the 57th-minute.

The Run of Play

After Doyle’s goal in the opening eight minutes put the Razorbacks on the board, SEMO countered in the 11th-minute with a shot that would eventually fall short of Arkansas’ far post. Haley VanFossen cleared it out of bounds for the Redhawks corner, but nothing came of it.

Cannata was able to get on the end of a Razorback cross with her head, but the SEMO ‘keeper made a diving save to her right to show it away. Cannata kept pushing in the 17th-minute, taking on a defender and putting a strike across goal for the 2-0 Arkansas edge. Pirkle snuck in her header before the end of the first 45 minutes.

Arkansas continued to pour it on in the second half, adding goals by Podojil and Cannata, her second, as the run of play stayed in the SEMO defensive half for most of the final 45 minutes.

Next Up

The Razorbacks will be back in Fayetteville for a home stint when they host Lamar and McNeese State next week. First kick against Lamar on Thursday will be at 7 p.m., while the match against McNeese State next Sunday is slated for 1 p.m. Both matches will be televised on SEC Network+.

Razorbacks finish third at Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Julian Perico fired three rounds in the 60’s to finish runner-up and Mason Overstreet carded a 66 on Sunday to tie for third as both Razorbacks had career-bests for scores in relation to par. Arkansas posted a final-round 13-under-par 347 to finish third at the Carmel Cup, played at historic Pebble Beach Golf Links (par 72 – 6,828 yards).

The -28 team score, which the Hogs posted at last year’s Carmel Cup, ties for fourth best in relation to par by a Razorback squad all time Arkansas’ score of -13 Sunday ties for the fifth best in relation to par in school history, matching the team’s second round score at Pebble Beach last season.

Texas Tech won the eight-team event with a three-round score of 1,045. Oklahoma, which led after rounds one and two, finished second (1,051), one stroke ahead of Arkansas (1,052). Rounding out the field was Georgia (1,063), TCU (1,080), Oklahoma State (1,083), Mississippi State (1,083) and Vanderbilt (1,089).

Perico finished runner-up with rounds of 68-68-67 for a 54-hole score of 203, which ranks sixth best in school history. However, Perico’s three-round total of 13-under-par ties his career best (shooting 13-under with a school-record 197 in winning the par 70 Jerry Pate Invitational last fall). The 13-under par total ties for third best in the Razorback record book. After 15 collegiate events, Perico had recorded four Top 5 finishes and 15 rounds in the 60’s.

The freshman shot a bogey-free 67 Sunday, carding four birdies on the front nine and one on the back. Like yesterday, he moved into the lead with his birdie on 12 but settled for a runner-up finish after finishing with six pars. He finished with 15 birdies and his 4.83 scoring average on the par 4’s was second best in the field for the weekend.

Overstreet, who tied for third with scores of 68-71-66 (205), carded two eagles on Sunday as he led the field in par 5 scoring (4.33) for the weekend. He finished the day with a 6-under-par 66 and ended the event at 11-under par, which is a career-best for the senior. The 11-under also ties for ninth on the Razorback all-time list in relation to par. Overstreet now has 27 career rounds in the 60’s and has posted a round of 66 or better seven times.

William Buhl climbed six spots to place 11th (tied) at -5 (71-72-67=210). Buhl, like Perico, turned in a bogey-free round of 67, posting four birdies on the front nine and one on the back. The 67 is Buhl’s best round in this his fourth trip to Pebble Beach as was his score of -6 (210). His score of -6 in relation to par is his second best while Buhl posted his 15th career Top 20 finish.

Tyson Reeder finished in a tie for 17th with a 2-under-par total of 214 (73-67-74). Dating back to last season, Reeder has finished an event under par in three of his last five tournaments. Luis Garza tied for 33rd (73-74-73=220) and Mauricio Figueroa was 42nd (79-78-75=241).

The Razorbacks return to action in seven days, playing in the annual Gopher Invitational Aug. 8-9. The Razorbacks have won the event twice and William Buhl is defending individual medalist.
