SILOAM SPRINGS – Senior Kinzee Mayo has been named the SAC’s Attacker of the Week by the league offices on Monday (Aug. 26) for her performances in John Brown’s 4-0 weekend at the KCAC Fall Fling in Hutchinson, Kan.

The Golden Eagles (6-2) have pieced together a six-match win streak after starting off the 2019 campaign with a pair of setbacks. This past weekend, JBU bested Bethel (Kan.), Avila (Mo.), Oklahoma Wesleyan and Sterling (Kan.) – all in straight-set fashion. John Brown has won its last five without dropping a game.

Mayo, a native of Anthony, Kan., was the offensive highlight for the JBU attack as the senior posted a 3.1 kills per set average while boasting a career-best 12 kills against Sterling en route to claiming her first-career SAC weekly honor. More impressive was her consistency as she finished the weekend hitting .490 (28-3-51).

She also posted eight rejections, seven of the block-assist variety.

“I’m excited for and proud of Kinzee being named the Attacker of the Week for her performance this past weekend,” head coach Ken Carver admitted. “Coming off of our first tournament in California, Kinzee really upped her focus and desire to get better and trained really hard in preparation for the KCAC Fall Fling. She was able to dial in her attack timing and did a fantastic job of making smart shots and seeing openings on the court to put balls down for our team consistently over the course of the entire tournament.

“Her consistency led to her finishing the weekend as the top attacker of the entire tournament. Beyond her outstanding performance on the court, as one of our three captains, she led our team well by being a vocal presence on and off the court and a consistent source of encouragement and positive energy for her teammates as well. To have this performance in front of family and friends, and now this honor, all icing on the cake for her.”

SILOAM SPRINGS – Freshman Jacob Zamarron and senior Britt Wisener were selected as the SAC’s first Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday (Aug. 26) for their performances against Texas A&M – Texarkana and Lyon.

The selection was the first for Zamarron, who posted seven points in his first two collegiate outings. Meanwhile, the honor is the second in the career of Wisener, who backstopped the Golden Eagles (2-0-0) to a pair of victories.

John Brown picked up a tough 2-1 road win at Texarkana (0-1-0) to open the season. Zamarron tallied in his collegiate debut – a header in the box off a service from sophomore Adrian Immel. The goal was instrumental in building the lead for JBU as the visitors would hold on for the narrow victory.

Wisner needed to make just one save in the match against Texarkana.

Back at Alumni Field last weekend against the Scots (0-2-0), the Rogers native wasted little time in finding the scoresheet as he booted home a strike from just inside the left corner of the box, lofting a shot over the Scot keeper. While his goal would hold up as the game-winner, he later distributed a trio of primary assists in the second half, including twice in sophomore Goncalo Verissimo hat trick effort to lead the Golden Eagles to a 7-1 lopsided win over the Scots in the home opener.

Wisener, from Houston, Texas, gobbled up a pair of saves in the victory, moving to 12-8-1 all-time in his collegiate career.

Currently, Zamarron is tied for 10th in the nation with his seven-point outburst over the two-match stretch.

SILOAM SPRINGS – Juniors Caitlyn Logan and Vanessa Reynoso were named the SAC Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the league office for their performance against LSU Shreveport this past weekend on Monday (Aug. 26).

The award is the fourth of Logan’s career while Reynoso picked up the honors for the first time as a Golden Eagle.

While the John Brown midfield and back line limited the Pilots (0-1-0) to just three shots, two on target, Logan’s acrobatic save in the early going to preserve the 0-0 stalemate that persisted into the intermission. The goalkeeper from Charlotte, N.C., was not called upon in the second half as JBU (1-0-0) maintained overwhelming control, out-shooting the visitors 14-1 en route to a two-goal outburst.

The clean sheet was the 14th of Logan’s career.

Reynoso, meanwhile, played a hand in each Golden Eagle tally in the second half. In the 67th minute, the midfielder’s through ball past the Shreveport back line sprung senior Kristen Howell into a one-on-one with the keeper. Howell sidestepped the keeper and struck from a tough angle to net the game-winner.

With just over five minutes remaining, Reynoso iced the contest by deflecting freshman Emma Schoenberg’scross from the left side up and over the Pilot keeper, netting her third career goal to cap off a three-point outing in the John Brown season opener.

JONESBORO – A graduate assistant the last two seasons, Rachel Pollock has been promoted to assistant coach for the Arkansas State women’s golf program, head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw announced Monday.

“It is an amazing time to have Rachel Pollock back for a third year,” Desbiens Shaw said. “As a coach, you always try to find your best assistant and that’s what we have with Rachel. She has brought a tremendous amount of golf knowledge to our team, she has so much enthusiasm to share and has made such an impact on our course management so far. I could not be happier with such a great assistant and I look forward to a very successful season.”

Pollock helped guide the Red Wolves to their best three-round score (889) ever at the Sun Belt Conference Championship, which was also their best in any tournament since at least the 2000-01 season. The total included the second lowest single-round score of the season, a 294 for in the second round of the league championship.

“First, I would like to thank M.J., (Athletics Director) Terry Mohajir and (Senior Women’s Administrator) Amy Holt for all of their support and opportunity to return to this program as assistant coach,” Pollock said. “I look forward to continuing to help build a successful program on the golf course and in the classroom.”

Her first season at A-State saw the Red Wolves place fifth at the Sun Belt Conference Championships to match their best finish at the tournament since 2003-04. A-State posted a 305.4 team stroke average that was its top mark since at least before the 2002-03 season.

Pollock came to the program after spending four seasons competing for East Tennessee State University. Playing in all but five events in her college career with the Buccaneers, Pollock recorded a career‐best‐three‐round total of 5‐over 221 (74‐73‐74) at the Fall Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State in the fall of 2015.

Pollock helped the Buccaneers to two wins and 18 top‐five finishes in her four seasons. She graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors while earning her B.S. in Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science and a minor in Coaching from East Tennessee State University in 2017.

The Canadian native finished 12th on Golf Canada’s 2016‐17 Order of Merit and eighth on the 2011‐12 Junior Order of Merit. She is bilingual in French and English.

A-State opens the 2019-20 season on Sept. 9 at the Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Mo. A-State will host the Lady Red Wolves Classic Oct. 14-15 at Sage Meadows Golf Club.

UCA falls to Arizona State in Season Opener

TEMPE, Arizona – It was a tough night for the University of Central Arkansas women’s soccer team as goals were at a premium in its 7-1 season opener defeat to Arizona State Sunday night from Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Potentially the toughest game of the season for the Bears, they faced a star studded Arizona State squad that featured six players from their respective national teams, a top honor for any footballer.

UCA (0-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, but were unable to consistently create chances for the entire duration of the match. The Bears tallied three shots total, putting two on target compared to Arizona State’s 19 shots combined with nine on target.

FIRST HALF

  • Senior striker Connie Awuku-Darkoh gave the Bears a 1-0 advantage inside of nine minutes after capitalizing on a mistake from the Arizona State goalkeeper.
  • Arizona State equalized in the 12th minute and would take a 2-1 lead in the 30th minute. Both ASU goals scored by Nicole Douglas.
  • Arizona State went on to score two more goals before halftime and went into the locker room with a 4-1 advantage.

SECOND HALF

  • Central Arkansas gave up goals in the 48th and 54th minute, ultimately falling down seven goals to one.
  • Freshman Sydney Brough would create the best chance for the Bears in the second half after her 84th minute strike forced a save from the Arizona State keeper.

COACH JEREMY BISHOP QUOTES
“It’s great to be able to get out on the field with an opponent of that caliber and compete with them. To play against a team where at least half of their starting lineup is national team players from all over the world is a great experience, something we can learn and draw experience from. We are ready to get home, get back to work and be ready for our home opener Friday night.”

ON DECK
The Bears will look to bounce back Friday evening as they host Missouri State in their home opener at the Bill Stephens Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
