December 3, 2019

Heber Springs dropped a 44-21 decision to Conway St. Joseph in a first-round contest from the Joe Mallett Classic.

The Panthers (0-3) will face either Shirley or South Side Bee Branch in consolation contest Thursday night at 8:15 at the St. Joseph Family Activity Center in Conway.

Over the Thanksgiving break, Heber Springs traveled to Clinton on November 26 and was a 71-35 setback.

The Panthers were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 34-15 at the half. Senior Adam Martin, who finished with 19 points and four 3-pointers, scored 11 of the Panthers first-half points including three 3-pointers.

Only positives came from Heber Springs head coach Chad Johnson following Thursday’s 68-36 loss to Riverview in the basketball season opener at the Panther Den.

“They were only four days out of football, but practiced hard to prepare for the first game,” Johnson said. “The result was larger than the final score. We battled throughout the game. We are not in basketball shape yet and ran out of gas in the fourth quarter.”

Heber Springs trailed 16-10 after the first quarter. Riverview increased its lead to 26-15 with a 10-5 scoring run. The two teams battled almost even for the remainder of the second quarter as the Raiders led 38-25 at halftime.

The Panthers went cold in the third quarter as Riverview capitalized. The Raiders blew the game open with a 10-0 scoring run and led 51-32 going into the fourth quarter.

Adam Martin led the Panthers with 15 points, followed by Dalton McCollum with eight points. Cahill Overstreet and Myles Arnett scored 15 points for Riverview. Kahlil Blackmon and R.J. McCall each added 11 points.

“Riverview got its running game going and that led to the gap in the final score,” Johnson said. “I’m proud how the players performed. They battled and played with a lot of grit.”
Johnson expects improvement with completion of the football season with the players concentrating on basketball.

“I love coaching players who want to be here and help the program,” he said. “They want to make the program successful.”

Clinton’s football season ended Friday and all players are expected to be available for Tuesday’s game.

“We will be playing a tough opponent for the second straight game,” Johnson said. “The players and I look forward to the challenge.”

The game will wrap up a four-game night, with the junior high girls starting the action at 4:30 p.m., followed by the junior boys and the two high school games.

Guy High School

November 22, 1916

Conway Log Cabin Democrat Weekly

The Guy high school is moving along smoothly and every boy and girl seems to be working faithfully.

The open session of the Franklin Literary Society was a decided success. We commend our young people for their efforts and thank our patrons for their presence.

Prof. Gray has coached his basketball team into a very effective machine. He works out daily with his husky boys. The town supports the team and is very proud of the record they are making. We believe Mr. Gray is developing our boys morally and physically on the baksetball court. Our last game against Springfield resulted in Guy’s favor, 31 to 28.

Guy downs Springfield

November 21, 1916

Conway Log Cabin Democrat Weekly

GUY – In one of the hardest fought basketball games played on the local court, the Guy team defeated Springfield by the narrow margin of 31-28. The teams were evenly matched and every man on both teams fought like a demon for victory. At the end of the first half the score stood 11 to 12 for Guy.

At the beginning of the last half both teams come on the court of “pep” and fight. Had it not been for the clever team work of the Guy team, Springfield would have made quick work of them. Time after time the efficient team work of Guy was smashed by the alert Springfield lads. The individual star for the Guy team was Capt. Glover, who made 21 of the 31 points made by the local chaps. “Check” Henry starred for the visitors, scoring nine points.

Webb and Pate, guards for the locals (Guy), played a great game and convinced the visitors that they were “on the square”. Our big center, Halbrook, used good head work and placed the ball at will to his teammates. Coach Gray of the Guy team had confidence in his men and expects to develop one of the best high school teams in the state.
